How to distinguish a Genuine Casio Watch from a Fake?

How to distinguish a Genuine Casio Watch from a Fake?

How to distinguish genuine Casio watches from a fake?

One of the most common questions we hear from WATCHZ customers is:

*“How can you distinguish genuine Casio watches from a fake?”*

And this question really does make sense.

Casio is known for affordable watches with a good balance of price, functionality and quality. But it is precisely the brand’s enormous popularity that has led to counterfeiting not only of expensive G-SHOCK or EDIFICE models.

Copies exist even of fairly affordable Casio models.

Therefore, the low price of genuine watches does not mean that counterfeit manufacturers are not interested in copying them.

When checking a watch, WATCHZ recommends not looking for one “secret sign,” but comparing several elements at once:

quality of execution → tag → caseback → reference → module number → functions → origin of the watch.

1. First, pay attention to the quality of the case, dial and strap

The first thing to assess when buying is how carefully the watch itself has been made.

1.png

The overall appearance of a counterfeit may indeed look similar to the original.

But the main goal of a counterfeit manufacturer is to reproduce the recognizable design at a significantly lower production cost.

That is why cost-cutting is often most noticeable in the details:

  • quality of the case;
  • finishing of metal surfaces;
  • quality of the plastic;
  • bracelet or strap;
  • clasp;
  • buttons;
  • crown;
  • printing on the dial;
  • small inscriptions.

This creates a characteristic situation:

the watch may look like a Casio, but on closer inspection it looks different.

Pay attention to the alignment of the indices, the quality of the CASIO logo, the position of the hands, the symmetry of the elements and the quality of the connections between the case and bracelet.

One of the best methods is to open the official page for this exact Casio reference and compare the model with the manufacturer’s photographs.

2. Pay attention to the tag and caseback

The next important stage is the markings.

The official tag may contain:

  • model reference;
  • barcode;
  • variant designation;
  • other information about the specific product.

The tag is very useful for verification because the code printed on it can be found online and compared with the watch.

However, it is important to avoid a common mistake here:

the tag itself is not yet one hundred percent proof of authenticity.

It can also be counterfeited.

In addition, the information on tags and the package contents may vary depending on the market and supply channel, while a unique serial number is not a mandatory element of every mass-market Casio model.

Therefore, what matters much more is whether the information on the tag matches the actual watch model.

3. Check the Casio reference online

Let us consider a specific example:

Casio MTP-M305D-1AVDF

Casio MTP-M305D-1AVDF

If you see this code on the tag, the first thing to do is search for the model online, preferably on the official Casio website.

In Casio’s international catalogue, this model is listed as MTP-M305D-1AV.

The official specification confirms:

  • stainless steel case;
  • metal bracelet;
  • mineral glass;
  • 50 metres of water resistance;
  • Moon phase;
  • dimensions of 44.5 × 34 × 9.3 mm;
  • weight of 116 g.

Now compare this information with the watch in front of you.

If the stated reference leads you to a completely different model, a different case or a different dial configuration, this is a serious reason to investigate further.

What does MTP-M305D-1AVDF mean?

A Casio code can be partially decoded.

Using the example:

MTP-M305D-1AVDF

MTP — category of Casio men’s analogue watches.

M305 — series code.

D — metal bracelet.

1 — black colour group.

The remaining part indicates the specific variation and commercial version of the model; the full code may also differ between markets.

Casio America does publish a designation system in which MTP refers to men’s analogue models, D refers to a metal bracelet, and 1 refers to the colour black. At the same time, Casio itself specifically warns that there are exceptions to these rules.

Therefore, there is no need to try to decode every last letter yourself.

Something else is more important for checking authenticity:

the reference must actually exist, and the model found under that reference must match your watch.

4. Pay attention to the quality of the engraving

The caseback of a genuine Casio should look neat.

3.png

Using this watch as an example:

The inscriptions should be:

  • clear;
  • readable;
  • evenly positioned;
  • free of spelling mistakes;
  • free of random symbols;
  • with a clear model and module number.

Counterfeits may show the opposite:

  • uneven markings;
  • strange font;
  • mistakes;
  • excessively rough application;
  • poorly readable characters;
  • incorrect model number.

On some models, the markings can indeed be felt with a finger.

But we would not use the rule:

“If you cannot feel the engraving with your finger, it is a fake.”

The method used to apply the markings and their depth may vary from model to model.

The key is clarity, correctness and whether the information matches the specific watch.

5. Find the module number

The Casio caseback also usually contains the Module Number.

This is the number of the watch movement / electronic module.

ОРИГИНАЛ (1).png

For Casio, it is particularly useful because the module number can be used to find the official manual and check how the specific watch should work.

This allows you to compare:

  • button functions;
  • time setting;
  • calendar;
  • stopwatch;
  • timer;
  • illumination;
  • alarms;
  • world time and other functions.

On counterfeit electronic Casio watches, the case may sometimes be reproduced quite well, but a completely different cheap module may be installed inside.

Therefore, the appearance may be similar while the functionality is not.

6. Cased in China is not a sign of a fake

This is one of the most important points.

ОРИГИНАЛ (2).png

Buyers sometimes see the following on the caseback:

Cased in China

and immediately conclude:

“Casio is a Japanese brand, so this must be a fake.”

This is incorrect logic.

Casio is indeed a Japanese company, but its global manufacturing system is not limited to Japan.

Casio officially has manufacturing facilities in China. For example, the company has listed Casio Electronics (Shaoguan) as a watch manufacturing facility and Casio Timepiece (Dongguan) as a facility producing watch components. Watches are also manufactured in Thailand and Japan.

Therefore:

Cased in China or another correct indication of Chinese production does not by itself mean that the Casio watch is counterfeit.

The country of manufacture and the country of origin of the brand are two different things.

Casio remains a Japanese brand regardless of which official facility assembled the specific model.

What about Made in Japan?

Here the opposite situation arises.

Some buyers believe:

**“If it says Made in Japan, then it is definitely genuine.”
**
That is not always the case either.

Casio does indeed manufacture certain watches in Japan.

For example, the company officially states that the A159W series is manufactured at Yamagata Casio in Japan, and the JAPAN marking appears on the caseback.

Casio A159WA-N1
Casio A159WA-N1

Casio A159WA-N1

There are also G-SHOCK models manufactured in Japan, including certain Full Metal series.

But these are specific models, not a rule for all Casio watches.

Therefore, if you are looking at a very affordable model that is officially manufactured outside Japan, but the suspicious example suddenly features a large:

MADE IN JAPAN

inscription, that is not automatically a reason to be pleased.

On the contrary:

if the country-of-manufacture marking does not match the official information for the specific model, this is an additional reason to check the watch.

Counterfeit manufacturers know that the phrase Made in Japan inspires trust in buyers, so a prestigious country-of-origin marking by itself guarantees nothing.

The correct rule is:

Do not check Casio according to the principle “China is bad, Japan is good.” Check whether the marking corresponds to that specific model.

7. Check the watch functions

This is especially important for:

  • digital Casio;
  • G-SHOCK;
  • EDIFICE;
  • models with many functions.

If the watch claims to have:

  • stopwatch;
  • timer;
  • illumination;
  • Bluetooth;
  • alarm;
  • calendar;
  • world time,

they should work exactly as described in the official manual for the corresponding module.

4.png

On a cheap copy, some dial elements may even be purely decorative.

8. Compare the dimensions and weight

The official Casio website publishes precise specifications for most models.

For example, MTP-M305D-1AV should weigh 116 grams and have dimensions of 44.5 × 34 × 9.3 mm.

Casio MTP-M305D-1AVDF
Casio MTP-M305D-1AVDF

A significant difference in weight may indicate that the copy uses:

  • different metal;
  • lighter links;
  • a different case;
  • cheaper components.

Weight by itself is not absolute proof, but it is useful when considered together with other signs.

How WATCHZ recommends quickly checking a Casio

If you need to perform an initial check, go through ten steps:

  1. Assess the quality of the case, dial and strap.
  2. Find the model code.
  3. Check it on the official Casio website.
  4. Compare the appearance with official photographs.
  5. Compare the tag and caseback.
  6. Find the Module Number.
  7. Check the functions against the official manual.
  8. Compare the dimensions, materials and weight.
  9. Check the country-of-manufacture marking.
  10. Do not draw a conclusion based on a single sign.

WATCHZ conclusion

The best way to identify a counterfeit Casio is not by one element, but by a combination of details.

We consider five signs the most useful:

quality of manufacture + reference + module number + caseback + correct functionality.

And inscriptions such as:

Cased in China

or:

Made in Japan

should only be assessed in relation to the specific reference.

Chinese production does not turn a genuine Casio into a fake — the brand has official manufacturing facilities in China.

Conversely, the Made in Japan inscription cannot by itself prove authenticity. Genuine Japan-made Casio watches do exist, but Casio specifically identifies such models as manufactured in Japan.

The most reliable principle is not to trust one inscription, but to check whether the entire watch corresponds to Casio’s official specification.

FAQ

Does Cased in China on a Casio mean it is fake?

No. Casio officially manufactures watches and watch components at facilities in China. Therefore, Chinese manufacturing markings are not by themselves a sign of a counterfeit.

Does Made in Japan mean that the Casio is definitely genuine?

No. Casio does indeed manufacture certain models in Japan, such as the A159W and certain G-SHOCK models, but the marking must correspond to the specific model.

How can you check a Casio reference?

Enter the model code into Casio’s official catalogue and compare the photograph, case, colour, bracelet and specifications with your watch.

If there is no tag, does that mean the Casio is fake?

No. The tag is a useful additional verification element, but it may have been removed or lost. In that case, use the information on the caseback.

Can authenticity be determined only by the engraving?

No. High-quality and correct markings are important, but the final conclusion is better made based on a combination of signs: reference, module, functions, appearance and specifications.
